Tataouine, the city of ksours, is nicknamed the “Gateway to the Desert.” It serves as the hub of tourism in southern Tunisia. This lively city is an important stop when visiting the great Tunisian South. The region offers desert landscapes, ksours, and other fortified villages. Despite dynamic Saharan tourism, the city retains its identity and traditional architecture.

The Tataouine region is world-famous for its name. It inspired director George Lucas when choosing the name of the sand planet in the film “Star Wars.” However, the city is especially renowned for its multitude of ksours. These fortified granaries date back to the 15th or 16th century. The most famous among them remains Ksar Ouled Soltane.
