The city of Douz is a small town in south-central Tunisia. It is known as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” Administratively, it belongs to the governorate of Kebili, 488 km from Tunis. The municipality had 30,245 inhabitants in 2014. Its residents are primarily “Mrazig,” descendants of Arab immigrants from the Banu Sulaym group who arrived in the 13th century.

Douz is a vast oasis and guardian of the Grand Erg. It has long been a market place where sedentary and nomadic peoples gathered. It became a major tourist center in southern Tunisia. At the start of the 20th century, the town consisted of only a few buildings surrounded by tents. Nomads stayed here during the hot months and left for winter pastures as the weather cooled.

The dromedary has always been man’s best friend in this region. This single-humped animal is indefatigable and adapts well to hostile environments. Camels can go months without drinking in winter. When they find water, they can drink 135 liters in just 10 minutes. Visitors can explore the animal souk to see different breeds and witness fierce negotiations.

The Thursday morning weekly market sells handicrafts. Visitors can find Berber jewelry, carpets, and comfortable shoes made of camel or goat leather. The famous “burnous,” a hooded cape made of sheep’s wool, is also available. Women make this garment, and its preparation takes about a month.

The Douz Sahara Festival, held since 1967, celebrates Saharan and nomadic culture. It honors the heritage of the Mrazig community. Friendly countries like Algeria, Libya, and Egypt participate. They present their music and traditional dances. It is an annual winter event worth experiencing. Douz is a dream destination for desert exploration, either by camel or 4×4. The city offers many hotels for an original holiday combining escape and relaxation. The inhabitants are known for their hospitality and generosity.
