Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before visiting Matmata Berber village.

Can you stay in a troglodyte house in Matmata?

Yes — Hotel Sidi Driss in the village centre offers rooms carved into the rock just as George Lucas found them when filming Star Wars. Other troglodyte guesthouses operate in the village and surrounding area. Staying overnight gives you the full experience — arriving after day-trippers leave and experiencing the cool silence of underground rooms.

Is Matmata an authentic experience or a tourist trap?

Both, to some degree. The village has been on the tourist map since the 1970s and is well adapted to visitors. However, genuine troglodyte families still live in the surrounding hills at New Matmata and Tijma, where you can visit without crowds. The landscape of craters seen from the hilltops at sunset is genuinely spectacular.

How do you get to Matmata?

Matmata is about 450 km from Tunis — a 5-hour drive. From Djerba it is 2 hours by car. The most practical way is by rental car or organised tour. Shared taxis (louages) run from Gabes (40 km north). There is no train service.

Why is Matmata called Tatooine?

George Lucas filmed Luke Skywalker's home planet Tatooine at the Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata in 1976. He was struck by the alien-looking landscape of rock craters and underground pit dwellings. The name "Tatooine" comes from the nearby town of Tataouine. The hotel still displays Star Wars memorabilia.
