Ksar Hadada Tataouine is a historic ksar located in the south of Tunisia. It lies five kilometers from Ghomrassen and about eighty kilometers from Tataouine. This ancient fortress stands as a testament to Tunisia’s rich architectural heritage.
The climate in this region is semi-arid. The Sahara desert lies about twenty kilometers away. Rain is very rare but very heavy when it appears. Summer temperatures can reach 50°C during the day. Winter temperatures can drop to 0°C at night.
The ksour (plural of ksar) were fortresses. They were built on top of mountains. Their purpose was to protect crops from looters. Alveoli collected fodder, oil and cereals. These formed several granaries. A guard watched over them. Today, most of these ksour are abandoned.
Ksar Hadada Tataouine has partly become a hotel. Tourists stop there during their visits. Part of the ksar also served as a film set. Director George Lucas used it in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. He created the village of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine. This is where Anakin Skywalker was born. Star Wars fans from around the world visit this site.
