Perched on a hill at an elevation of approximately 500 meters, Chenini’s citadel (ksar, or kalâa) commands attention. Historically, it served as a storage site for food reserves and valuables, and offered refuge during attacks. The ksar fostered symbiotic relationships between the Berbers and Arab groups, particularly during the Hilalian invasions in the 11th century. Over time, the village expanded beyond the hill, flourished, and eventually gave rise to modern-day Chenini.

A Treasured Landmark and Star Wars Connection

Chenini’s white minaret once served as a landmark for caravanners, guiding them through the rugged terrain. Today, it stands as a testament to the village’s enduring legacy.

Beyond its historical significance, Chenini has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its unique charm. It has also left its mark on pop culture: one of the moons of Luke Skywalker’s planet in Star Wars shares its name with this captivating village. The region’s awe-inspiring landscapes have served as the backdrop for many iconic scenes in the beloved film franchise.
