About This Museum
The Sousse Archaeological Museum is located in part of the city’s kasbah, within a large Ottoman building dating from the 9th century. Founded in 1951, the museum contains the largest collection of Roman mosaics in Tunisia, after that of the Bardo National Museum. Several pieces represent everyday scenes that reveal much about life at the time, such as popular beliefs, hunting, and entertainment.

Among the most famous mosaics at the Archaeological Museum of Sousse are the Triumph of Bardo National Museum, the abduction of Ganymede by Zeus transformed into an eagle, the Toilet of Venus, and the Triumph of Neptune. According to experts, the most beautiful piece in the entire collection is undoubtedly the head of Medusa. Her gaze recalls its hypnotic power. In addition to the mosaics, the museum also houses everyday objects covering the period from the 2nd to the 4th century.
