Guellala Museum

The Guellala Museum, also known as the Museum of Djerban Heritage, crowns the Tassita hill — the highest point of Djerba — in the potters’ village of Guellala. Inaugurated in 2001 inside a former Quranic school that rises like a small citadel, it is one of the island’s richest cultural attractions, spreading over more than four thousand square metres of themed pavilions.

Through a sequence of life-size scenes, some of them animated, the museum brings to life the customs and ceremonies of Djerba — weddings, crafts, music, myths and the daily work that is slowly disappearing. Visitors discover superb traditional costumes, Jewish and Muslim jewellery, carpets and carved doors, a hall of Arabic calligraphy, and a gallery of mosaics recreating masterpieces from the ancient Roman city of Meninx.
