The village of Guellala lies in the south of Djerba, facing the Boughrara golf course. It is also home to the island’s highest point, though at only 53 meters, it is hardly a mountain. This village is one of the few places where the Berber dialect is still spoken. The Berber-speaking inhabitants use a language where the letter “T” appears in almost every word. In terms of religion, the inhabitants follow the Ibadhite rite, unlike the majority of Tunisians who are Malikites.
Guellala derives from the word Goulla (jar) or Gallal (the person who makes jars). It is the capital of pottery on Djerba and in southern Tunisia, just as Nabeul is in the north. This craft dates back to the time of the Greeks and Phoenicians. It continues today, passed down from father to son, representing the way of life, history, and specialty of the region.
The Village of Guellala : Pottery and Heritage Museum
If you spend a day in the village, do not hesitate to visit one of the workshops. You can attend a detailed explanation of the work with its different stages. You will also see a demonstration of the work done by hand. Another essential visit is the heritage museum. Installed on the highest point of the island, the museum’s terrace offers a magnificent view. The visit introduces you to Djerbian life through various themes: traditions, customs, traditional clothes, and more.
Inspired by the architecture of a Menzel Djerbian, the museum consists of different rooms, each presenting a different theme. It is not just a visit but a journey back in time into Djerba’s traditions and local life. Visitors can explore open spaces, the oil mill, the weaving workshop, and wedding attire. Ultimately, the village of Guellala offers an unforgettable journey into Djerba’s cultural and artisanal heritage.
