The Roman villas of Carthage

The Roman villas of Carrthage is a district that brings together the largest number of remains of patrician dwellings unearthed in the ancient metropolis. If the outline, very clear and underlined by the powerful line of a portion of cobbled street, gives a precise idea of the topographic layout of a Roman city, the remaining vestiges give only a vague idea of the approval and of the luxury of these residences which sloped gently down to the seaside.

A house, called “the villa of the aviary”, the best preserved on the site, has been restored to give us a Roman interior from Africa: rooms preceded by a courtyard supported by columns around a central courtyard decorated with a garden and paved with mosaics.
From the terrace, there is a superb view over the bay of Tunis.
