Getting around Tunisia is surprisingly easy for a North African destination. The country has a well-connected transport network, and getting around Tunisia independently is both affordable and efficient whether you take a louage, a train or a rental car. Here is your complete 2026 guide.

Tunisia has a well-connected transport network that makes getting around surprisingly easy for a North African country. Here is your complete guide.

1. Louage (Shared Taxi), The Tunisian Way

The louage is Tunisia’s iconic long-distance shared taxi, a battered station wagon that departs when all 5 seats are filled. It’s cheap (about 30-50% cheaper than renting a car), fast, and connects almost every town. Depart from dedicated louage stations (not regular taxi ranks). Best for: Tunis↔Sousse, Tunis↔Sfax, Sfax↔Djerba.

2. Train (SNCFT)

Tunisia’s rail network runs along the coast from Tunis to Sfax (via Sousse, Monastir). Comfortable, cheap, and on time. Tunis–Sousse: 1h45, about 7 TND. Tunis–Sfax: 3h30. The Métro Léger in Tunis is a light rail network covering the city.

3. Bus (SNTRI)

National buses (SNTRI) serve all major destinations including Tozeur, Gafsa, and Tataouine. Air-conditioned, comfortable. Slower than louage but often more comfortable for long routes.

4. Car Hire

Essential for reaching archaeological sites, Sahara treks, and ksour villages. International agencies (Avis, Hertz, Budget) operate at Tunis and Djerba airports. Cost: from 80–120 TND/day for a small car. Roads are generally good; petrol is cheap.

5. Djerba

On the island itself, hire a bicycle, scooter or car. The island is flat and small (25km across). Taxis are metered and inexpensive.

6. Taxi

Yellow taxis (ville) are metered and affordable in cities. Ensure the meter is running. Airport taxis in Tunis run on a fixed tariff, agree the price before departing.
