The Mountain Oasis of Chebika

The mountain oasis of Chebika lies an hour’s drive northwest of Tozeur. Visitors must cross the chott (salt lake) el-Gharsa to reach it. This oasis clings to the side of desolate rocks. The old houses, made of stones and earth, now stand abandoned. Locals have moved to more modern concrete-block constructions below. Water is essential for any Tunisian village. Springs provide this vital resource here. Consequently, a lush palm grove flourishes at the foot of the old houses. At sunset, the contrast is striking. Green palm tops stand out against the surrounding ocher peaks. Hiking enthusiasts can continue their exploration. A 1.5-hour walk leads to the oasis of Tamerza.
