The Medina of Tozeur

The Medina of Tozeur is one of the best preserved in Tunisia. Locals also call it the district of old Ouled el Hadef. A magnificent stone wall surrounds the medina. At the entrance, visitors notice the traditional local stone called “briquette.” All the walls and most administrative buildings use this material. The city built these structures in the southwest. Visitors can also tour the factory.

Upon entering the city, visitors fall under its charm. The small vaulted streets retain their beauty. A visit is essential to fully understand the city. This pleasant walk allows visitors to explore the narrow streets freely. There is no need to consult a map. At the bend of a path, visitors will find one of the oldest doors in Tunisia. Craftsmen crafted this door from palm wood.

The Medina : History and Architecture

At the heart of the city, the Koranic school stands with its imposing minaret. The house of the bey (a local governor) also stands here. This house is famous as a filming location. Anthony Minghella shot scenes of The English Patient here. A remarkable mashrabiya (palm wood window) allows women to look outside unseen. The visit lasts approximately one hour.

The medina is not very large. It has some covered streets and small squares. However, it is known for its unique traditional architecture. Bricks decorate the facades, forming characteristic geometric patterns. Apart from the market and small souk shops, visitors can explore the small museum. This museum of archaeology and popular traditions occupies the old Koubba of Sidi Bou Aissa.

The best-preserved areas lie to the left (east) of the museum. This area houses the palace of the former governor (Dar-Bey).
