The city of Zaghouan lies 50 km from Tunis and 35 km from the seaside resort of Hammamet. It is one of northern Tunisia’s most captivating destinations. The town boasts stunning views, dominating a vast agricultural plain while nestling on the slopes of Djebel Zaghouan. With nearly 20,798 inhabitants (2014), Zaghouan offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage.

Steeped in history, Zaghouan showcases remnants of its rich past. Charming narrow streets wind through the ancient Ziqua site, where only a triumphal gate remains. The town is renowned for its roses, particularly the rosehip. Andalusian Muslims expelled from Spain cultivated these roses since the 17th century. Zaghouan also attracts tourists thanks to its abundant natural springs (“aïns”) and rejuvenating hammams. The Hammam of Zriba, eight kilometers away, offers an exceptional experience with rose water.

The City of Zaghouan : History and Heritage

Significant events shaped Zaghouan’s history. The city flourished during the Roman period, particularly between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The Romans recognized it as a municipality. They named it Ziqua, likely derived from “aqua” (water). Water played a vital role in the region’s wealth. The famous Water Temple stands proudly on the mountain’s summit. This imposing structure symbolizes the city’s Roman history. Today, the city lies upon the remains of the ancient Roman city. Ultimately, Zaghouan invites you to explore its fascinating history, natural wonders, and cultural treasures.
