Chott El Djerid

Chott El Djerid is a vast salt lake in southern Tunisia. It ranks among the largest salt pans in the world. This unique landscape serves as an important wetland habitat for various bird species. Many migratory birds travel long distances from Europe and Africa to rest here. The lake also provides an important source of salt for the local population. Its stunning landscape makes it a popular tourist destination. Despite its importance, Chott El Djerid faces environmental challenges. These include water loss and salt intrusion into surrounding farmland. However, efforts are underway to preserve its ecological and economic significance.

Chott El Djerid is the largest saline plain or sebkha in Tunisia, covering approximately 5,000 km². It is also the largest sebkha in the Maghreb region. On November 7, 2007, the site received Ramsar site designation. Furthermore, on May 28, 2008, the Tunisian government proposed it for UNESCO World Heritage listing.

The salt lake stretches almost a hundred kilometers from east to west. Its eastern tip connects to the Chott el-Fejaj. The lake lies on an east-west axis between Nefta in the west and El Hamma in the east. The entire area covers practically the width of southern Tunisia. It sits between the Gulf of Gabès and the Algerian border, roughly twenty kilometers from each.

Chott El Djerid occupies a synclinal hollow between the Tunisian mountain ranges and the Saharan platform. Its current altitude ranges from 15 to 20 meters above sea level. Visitors can marvel at this breathtaking expanse of salt stretching as far as the eye can see. The Saharan Atlas mountain range dominates the backdrop. Moreover, visitors can admire the famous mirages above the horizon. This optical phenomenon marks the depression of the salt.
