Beni Metir is a small village in northwestern Tunisia. It lies in the mountainous region of Kroumirie. The village sits just a few kilometers from Aïn Draham.

Beni Metir belongs to the territory of the Kroumir confederation. The village stands 650 meters above sea level. Administratively, it falls under the governorate of Jendouba.

Beni Metir holds the title of the least populated municipality in Tunisia. In 2014, it had only 784 inhabitants. Most residents are young people. They mainly work for two state companies. These are the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company and the National Water Operating and Distribution Company.

Authorities built the village in 1948. They wanted to house engineers and workers. These people came to build the Beni Mtir dam. The village overlooks this dam. The town has kept its original architecture. A municipal decree preserved this style. Typical features include tiled roofs. The facades are identical. They have black shutters and red frames. Consequently, the village retains a unique charm.

A hot spring called Hammam Salihine exists nearby. Its temperature reaches 73°C. This makes it the hottest spring in Tunisia. Moreover, it ranks among the hottest in the world. The water has healing properties. It helps with rheumatic diseases, inflammations, and skin conditions. Currently, authorities study a pilot spa project. The European Union supports this initiative. The project focuses on ecological tourism.

In 1958, the first Council of Ministers took place here. This meeting occurred outside the presidential palace of Carthage. Officials gathered in a chalet. This building now houses the municipal offices. Furthermore, an orphanage began here. UNICEF helped establish it.

The village appears in a documentary film. Françoise Gallo directed it in 2006. The title is “Stessa luna”. The film recalls a moment from the director’s life.
