Utica archaeological site

The Utica Archaeological Site is one of the very first Phoenician counters in Africa. The Phoenicians probably established it around 1100 BC. Pliny even specifies: 1101! Utica is older than Carthage. It played the role of capital for a long time. Its neighbor founded at the end of the 9th century BC eclipsed it. However, Carthage grew rapidly in power. Utica associated itself with its neighbor’s destiny, sometimes in spite of itself. The city experienced good times and dark times. At the decisive turning point of the confrontation between Carthage and Rome, it chose the right side. This decision, in 146 BC, earned it the privilege of becoming the capital of Africa for 130 years.

Then, it happened to Utica what happened to most ancient Tunisian cities. It experienced a diverse fortune. An irremediable decline sealed its fate in the 7th century.

Utica Archaeological Site, Punic necropolis and Roman ruins

The archaeological site covers a very modest area. Today, it lies 12 km from the sea. The deltaic filling of the Medjerda river mouth caused this shift. A few buildings remain on the surface. These include the superb “cascade house.” Other structures include houses, temples, a forum, and thermal baths. Traces of theatres, circuses, and amphitheatres also exist.

The underground level is less spectacular but perhaps more important. Excavations brought to light a Punic necropolis. Burials date back to the 7th century BC. They delivered precious funerary furniture. This tells us about the beliefs of that time. It also reveals the population’s way of life and activities.
