📖 About this excursion

The Tozeur and the mountain oases excursion is a unique experience to discover a large part of southern Tunisia. During this excursion you will visit Tozeur, the city of palm groves. You will cross the Chott Djerid, considered the largest salt lake in North Africa, and you will explore the mountain oases.

You will stroll in Chebika to admire its oasis and its waterfall which springs from the side of the mountain. Then you will discover the waterfall of Tamerza and the great canyons. You will cross the old Dakar Rally track and you will discover the Mos Espa village from Star Wars. You will also have the opportunity to ride a camel in the middle of the desert in Douz and you will visit a troglodyte house with locals in Matmata.

Day 1

Matmata, Mountain Oases & Star Wars Sunset

In the morning, our team will pick you up from your accommodation in Djerba. After a short presentation, you will set off to discover Tozeur and its mountain oases.

First, you will visit a troglodyte house with a Berber family in Matmata. Then, you will continue to Douz, where you can explore the souk and enjoy an optional camel trek through the sand dunes.

After that, you will cross the Chott El Djerid, a large salt lake famous for its mirages and color effects, with a photo stop. Then, you will continue to Tamerza, where you will enjoy a delicious local meal.

Later, you will take the time to visit the mountain oases. You will discover Chebika and its waterfall, Tamerza and its large waterfall, and Midès with its great canyons.

At the end of the afternoon, your driver will take you on an adrenaline adventure. You will cross the old Dakar Rally track and the salt lake Chott El Gharsa to stop at the famous site of Ong Jmal. Then, you will conquer the great sand dunes to finally arrive at Mos Espa, considered the largest Star Wars set in Tunisia. You will take time to explore and watch the sunset over the surrounding dunes.

Finally, you will admire the basket of Nefta with a good mint tea. Then you will return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2

Tozeur Medina, Berber Villages & Star Wars Sets

In the morning, after breakfast, you will set off to explore the old medina of Tozeur. Unique with its architecture and local bricks, you will take time to wander through its labyrinthine alleys while listening to your guide’s explanations.

Then, you will head to Tamazret, a Berber village. After that, you will continue to Matmata, where you will visit a troglodyte house. Your host will be happy to serve you a good rosemary tea with honey and olive oil.

Next, you will head to Sidi Driss, the filming location of several scenes from the famous Star Wars saga, before taking time for lunch.

After the meal, you will go to Toujane, an ocher-colored Berber village nestled between two mountains. You will admire the panoramic view and visit the village up close. This village is famous for its Berber carpets and honey.

Finally, you will take the road back to Djerba, with your head full of good memories.
