📖 About this excursion
Tataouine Matmata offers a unique Star Wars adventure. This tour departs early from Djerba via the Roman road. First, you will stop at the Chahbania salt lake for a photo break. After that, you continue to the town of Tataouine Matmata’s famous landmark. Notably, this town inspired the name of the planet Tatooine in Star Wars. Here, you can walk around the market. You can also practice negotiating with local merchants.
Next, you will continue to Ksar Ouled Soltane. This fortified granary dates from the 15th century. In fact, it served as the setting for Mos Espa in Episode I. Consequently, you will see the slave quarters from the film.
Discover Berber villages and Ksour
Then, you journey to the Berber village of Chenini. During this visit, you will discover its oil mill. You will also see its granaries and its mosque. Moreover, you will admire houses carved into the mountains. Finally, you will enjoy the panoramic view overlooking the village.
Afterwards, you escape to Ksar Hadada. This magnificent 17th century attic features beautifully restored ghorfas (rooms). As a result, you can explore this famous Star Wars location. Specifically, this site served as a setting for Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Later, after lunch, you take the road to Matmata. The route goes through marvelous lunar landscapes. Upon arrival, you will visit the hotel Sidi Driss in Tataouine Matmata region. Importantly, this hotel served as the dining room and the Lars’ kitchen in Star Wars. Furthermore, you will see the cave rooms used in the film.
Then, you meet a Berber family. During this visit, you will discover a typical troglodyte house. Likewise, you share a moment of conviviality with the local inhabitants. Typically, they will offer you good mint tea. Sometimes, they may even offer a traditional dish.
On the way back, you stop at the Berber village of Toujane. There, you discover local traditions. You also see traditional costumes and typical jewels. Eventually, you return to Djerba. You will feel enriched and amazed by the treasures of southern Tunisia.

A Journey to Tatooine
In the morning, our team will pick you up from your accommodation in Djerba or Zarzis. You will leave via the Roman road.
First, you stop at the salt lake of Chahbania for a photo break. Then, you continue to the town of Tataouine. This town gave the planet Tatooine its name in the Star Wars saga. You will have the opportunity to walk around the market and practice negotiating with the merchants.
After that, you continue to Ksar Ouled Soltane. This very well preserved fortified granary was built by the Berbers in the 15th century. It served as the setting for Mos Espa in Episode I.
Then, you continue your journey to the Berber village of Chenini. You will discover its different buildings: the oil mill, the granaries, the mosque, the houses carved into the mountains, and the panoramic view overlooking the village.
Next, you go to Ksar Hadada, which was also used as a Star Wars filming location (some scenes from Episode I: The Phantom Menace). You can explore the streets of the ksar and imagine the film scenes.
Later, you enjoy lunch in a local setting.
After lunch, you take the road to Matmata through marvelous lunar landscapes. You will visit the hotel Sidi Driss, which includes several interior courtyards. One of them, named “Star Wars courtyard”, served as the setting for the dining room and the Lars’ kitchen. You will see the cave rooms that were used in the film.
After that, you go to a Berber family to discover a typical troglodyte house. You will share a moment of conviviality with the local inhabitants. They will surely offer you a good mint tea.
On the way back, you stop at the Berber village of Toujane. You will discover local traditions, costumes, and typical jewelry. Then you return to Djerba, enriched and amazed.
