Toujane Berber Village
The Eagle's Nest, Cliff-Face Berber Village
Toujane Berber village lies in southern Tunisia, North Africa. Its well-preserved traditional architecture and historical significance make it a fascinating destination. The village was once an important stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes. Consequently, it attracts visitors interested in learning about Berber culture and history.
When I first discovered Toujane, it was 12 years ago. A long, difficult track from Matmata led to the village. It was hidden behind a mountain. The village blends into the ocher landscape so well that it is almost invisible. Only a few whitewashed buildings reveal its presence. This village perches in the mountains, clinging to the side of the rock. It forms a natural circus shape, dominating a deep wadi from its 630-meter height. Nearly 200 of its stone houses remain uninhabited. Toujane is a Berber village where time has stood still.
Toujane Berber Village : Life and Transformation
The landscapes are grandiose, with a direct view of the sea just 30 km away. However, life here is tough. Harvests depend on capricious rain. Farmland is remote. The water sources lie lower than the village and still do not allow connection to the houses. Consequently, many villagers left in the 1970s to find work abroad or in new towns on the plain with running water and electricity.
A few years ago, the track became a road, opening up this remote village. Since then, a few travelers have ventured there, in transit between the desert and the sea. “Welcome” flowers now bloom along the road that crosses the village. The houses have also adorned themselves with their most beautiful adornment: the Toujane rugs. Yet, very few people take the time to really stop there. However, Toujane deserves a visit. Ultimately, this Berber village offers an unforgettable journey into Tunisia’s mountain heritage.
