The old port of Bizerte

The Old Port of Bizerte lies at the heart of the old city. Its small basin is surrounded by white houses, cafes, and large colorful boats. Visitors reach the old port from the medina. It is one of the most charming places in Bizerte. Many consider it one of the most beautiful spots in Tunisia. The basin holds old, colorful fishing boats. Quays host merchants, small jewelry shops, and cafes filled with men smoking chicha. Consequently, this creates a very pleasant and lively atmosphere.

Place Slahedine Bouchoucha features a 17th-century fountain. From there, the walls of the kasbah rise majestically. The north side of the canal is defended by this ancient fortress. It serves as the imposing sentinel guarding the port entrance. At the northern end of Avenue Habib Bougafta, visitors reach the canal connecting the sea to the port. The fort el-Hanni (also called Ksiba) protects the entrance on this bank. This small rounded fortress has a rectangular tower. Different occupants reorganized it over the centuries.

The Old Port of Bizerte is the city’s most charming quarter. The quay stretches in an arc along the Sienna ramparts of the kasbah. Low white houses line the waterfront. A modest red and green boat slices through the calm water. A fisherman unloads his catch for the nearby market. Another weighs anchor nearby. Consequently, Bizerte resembles a small Provençal or Spanish fishing port. However, it would have bartered its steeple for a minaret.
