El Beebane Islets form a unique natural site in southern Tunisia. This 39,000-hectare lagoon contains 9 small islands. It lies in the governorate of Medenine, between Zarzis and Ben Guerdane. On November 7, 2007, the Ramsar Convention recognized this wetland as a protected site. This convention commits States to preserve wetlands and their wildlife.
The lagoon covers 39,000 hectares and contains 9 small islands. Ejdaria, a 25-kilometer-long isthmus, separates the lake from the sea. This isthmus has very fertile land. Farmers have only exploited this land for fifty years.
The small port lies on the edge of the lake. Fishermen catch delicious fish in these waters. The salt from the sebkhas (saline depressions) enriches the fish. The village has 800 inhabitants. They form 250 families. Among them, 250 are fishermen.
The lagoon observes an annual biological rest period. This period lasts from February 1 to March 31. During this time, the fish multiply undisturbed. This practice ensures sustainable fishing for the future.
The State owns a large part of this area. It grants the exploitation of the islets to a private concessionaire. One of the 9 islets is landscaped. It welcomes visitors who respect the environment. Fishing revenues help pay the lagoon’s fishermen. Hotel benefits help maintain the islets. They also provide some facilities. These include a café and a relaxation center. The original plan included a large restaurant for tourist groups. However, the project was abandoned. The goal was to preserve the place.
