The City of Monastir

The city of Monastir lies in central-eastern Tunisia, on the Tunisian Sahel coast. It is located on a peninsula southeast of the Gulf of Hammamet, about twenty kilometers east of Sousse and 162 kilometers south of Tunis. In 2014, the municipality had 93,306 inhabitants. This coastal city charms visitors with its mild air, pure sky, blue sea, and spontaneous hospitality. The name “Monastir” itself is an invitation to travel.

Travelers discovering Monastir for the first time are often struck by its strong historical heritage. The city preserves its traditions quietly, despite its modern and open appearance. The Ribat, the city’s symbol, is one of Tunisia’s most impressive monuments. Monastir is a very pleasant city to explore on foot. Visitors can stroll along the seafront to the Ribat (citadel), then discover the marina and the historic district with its cobbled streets.
