The Canyons of Midès

The Canyons of Midès are an unmissable natural wonder in southern Tunisia. Midès ranks among the most beautiful mountain oases in the country. Its magnificent gorge stretches for 3 kilometers. The canyon features rounded shapes and striking color contrasts. Visitors can observe fossils and colorful minerals within these desert landscapes. These fossils date back millions of years. The site lies near the Tunisian-Algerian border. It sits roughly sixty kilometers from Tozeur and only ten kilometers from Tamerza.

Ancient Midès stood on the Saharan limes linking Tébessa to Gafsa. The Romans used the site as a signaling post. They employed mirrors to warn of approaching invaders. Today, many call Midès Tunisia’s “Far West.” This nickname comes from its dramatic canyons and proximity to the Algerian border. The canyons once surrounded the village on all sides. Consequently, the village resembled an ocean liner stranded on a spur. It was a true natural fortress.

Old Village and Cinematic History

Deadly floods struck Tunisia in 1969, claiming over 400 lives. The old village of Midès was abandoned after this disaster. Its ruins still seem to hang above the void. They cling to the canyon’s edge. The new village now sits at the heart of a nearby palm grove. This grove produces dates, oranges, and figs. The canyon’s dramatic landscapes served as a backdrop for desert scenes. For instance, the film The English Patient featured this location. Moreover, it appeared as the iconic “Star Wars Canyon.” Nine scenes were filmed here, including the Jawa ambush and Tusken Raider sequences.

The canyon unfolds astonishing layers of stratified rock. Erosion and the wadi’s impetuous course shaped these layers. Ocher and pink hues blaze at sunset.
