Ong Jemel Tozeur is a magnificent site in southern Tunisia. It owes its name to the shape of the rock. The rock sits majestically there and resembles a camel’s neck. This unique landmark attracts visitors from around the world.

The site also includes Chott el Gharsa. This saline depression generates spectacular mirages. It also contains Mos Espa, the hometown of Anakin Skywalker. He later becomes Darth Vader. Indeed, Ong Jmel hosted the filming of the first “Star Wars” movie. George Lucas chose this location for its otherworldly landscape. The desert scenery perfectly matched the planet Tatooine.

Ong Jemel Tozeur – A Site Saved from the Dunes

The #SaveMosEspa international campaign saved the Star Wars sets. It cost 300,000 DT. The advancing dunes threatened to bury the site. They move 15 meters each year. This work should give the site a respite. It will last eight to ten years. The Tunisian government supported this initiative. They recognized the site’s cultural and tourism value. Star Wars characters appeared at the ITB Asia 2017 show. The event took place in Singapore. They promoted the site to Asian tourists. These tourists are fond of the saga.

The region is magnificent. You can stay there for a few days. Discover Tozeur, with its charming medina and palm groves. Explore the mountain oases of Chebika, and Tamerza, Visit Nefta, known for its Sufi heritage and green oasis. Discover Chott El Jerid, Tunisia’s largest salt lake. Explore the desert at Tembaine. Hire a specialized guide and driver for these excursions. They ensure a safe and memorable journey.
