Jugurtha Table

Jugurtha Table is an impressive mesa in northwestern Tunisia. It is located in Kalaat-Senan, within the Governorate of Kef. This flat-topped mountain rises to 1,271 meters in altitude. It stands approximately 600 meters above the surrounding Ez-Zghalma plain. The plateau covers about 80 hectares. Its perimeter reaches roughly 4,000 meters. Sheer cliffs surround the table on all sides. These vertical walls make it an ideal natural fortress. Historically, this site served as a refuge against enemies. The only access point is from the north face. A narrow path, carved into a fault, leads to the summit. Moreover, a staircase of 136 steps aids the ascent. Traces of hooves remain visible on these stones.

Everything indicates that this place was an early settlement. Visitors can discover galleries used as granaries. There are also remains of dwellings and a fortification. Additionally, basins are carved into the rock to retain rainwater. The plateau provides sufficient vegetation to feed livestock. Consequently, people could live here independently for long periods. During the Numidian era, this site was a key defensive position. The plateau contains numerous archaeological treasures. These include dolmens, rock oil presses, and ancient silos.

History, Legend, and UNESCO Status

The table bears the name of King Jugurtha, the Numidian ruler. He used this natural stronghold during his war against Rome. The battle occurred around 107-105 BC. Some historians debate whether this was the exact location. However, the legend remains powerful. In 1896, a French military captain named it after Jugurtha.

This geological wonder has also served other purposes. In the 18th century, a rebel named Senan used it as a fortress. His resistance gave the nearby town its name, Kalaat Senan. On September 29, 2017, Tunisia submitted the site for UNESCO World Heritage listing. It is currently on the tentative list as a mixed cultural and natural site. This status recognizes its outstanding universal value. The site offers a breathtaking panoramic view from the top. Visitors can see across the Tunisian-Algerian countryside.
