Mactaris archaeological site

About This Site

The archaeological site of Mactaris lies in central-western Tunisia. It is located in Makthar, a city on the northern edge of the Tunisian ridge. The site is one of the largest in Tunisia. A significant portion remains unexplored archaeologically. The region’s relative remoteness contributed to this. The difficult integration into communication networks also played a role.

An archaeological park houses numerous remains. Some scattered elements lie outside the park. A small museum showcases various archaeological artifacts from the site.

Mactaris, Numidian origins, Roman prosperity, and decline

The site sits on the border between northwest and central-west Tunisia. It lies 150 kilometers southwest of Carthage. It is 70 kilometers southeast of Sicca Veneria. The site adjoins the modern city of Makthar. Makthar is a later offshoot of the colonial era. Certain buildings attest to this, such as the delegation headquarters. Residences with sloping roofs covered in red tiles also reflect this period.

Mactaris is the Latin adaptation of the original place name: Mktrm. This attests to the Libyan origins of the city. Numerous funerary monuments from this civilization confirm this. They have been incorporated into the site. This is all that remains as a “monumental” legacy from this period.

The city’s founding appears to date back to the 1st century BC. Punic or numidized settlers established it. They spread the religion, culture, and art of Carthage. This city continued to exist after the Romans arrived in the early 1st century. However, the main part of its archaeological heritage comes from the Roman period. This heritage is among the richest and most beautiful in Tunisia. The city reached its peak in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Its decline began in the 4th century. The invasions of the Vandals and Byzantines accelerated this decline.
