Tamazret Berber village is normally pronounced Ath Mizret, meaning “the children of Mizret.” This village lies 50 km from Gabès and 10 km from Matmata, a town famous for its troglodytes. Tamazret is one of the oldest Berber villages in the Matmata mountains. The Berber language (Tamazight) is still spoken here. The village sits 450 meters above sea level and belongs to the chain of historic villages in the Dahar mountains.

The paved National Road (RN20) links Medenine to Hazoua via Matmata. It passes through Tamazret and ends in Douz. This road has greatly reduced the village’s isolation and allowed tourists to discover it. The preservation of the village’s architectural aspect motivated the creation of the “Association for the Preservation of the Cultural and Architectural Heritage of the Village of Tamazret” in 1992.

Like other Berber mountain towns, Tamazret has a structure built around five well-defined districts. El Ghirane houses the primary school, youth center, and open-air theater. El Mezanna contains the dispensary and post office. Minej (meaning “west” in Berber), Mehaia, and Tazet are residential neighborhoods. The Mosque and the Moorish café crown the top of the village. From there, visitors enjoy a panoramic view of the Matmata mountains at sunrise and sunset.

Tamazret Berber Village : Economy and Museum

For centuries, the village economy relied on agriculture. Activities included arboriculture, cereals, and livestock. However, agricultural activity has now declined. Consequently, Tamazret has shifted its focus towards tourism and crafts.

Dar Tamazret, the museum, is unique in its kind. A man who will also be your host and guide created this museum. Visitors will discover Berber traditions and their history, including that of ElKahina, an emblematic figure of Berber resistance. Visitors will also discover an ingenious organization of underground galleries. This organization served as a real defense system against invaders. Ultimately, Tamazret Berber Village offers an unforgettable journey into Tunisia’s Berber heritage.
