About This Park
Jebel Serdj National Park lies between the delegations of Siliana Sud (governorate of Siliana) and Oueslatia (governorate of Kairouan). It is part of the northern slope of Djebel Serj. This 1,720-hectare park was created on March 29, 2010. The Ministry of Agriculture manages it.
Jebel Serdj National Park, rare trees, wildlife, and gazelles
Jebel Serj hosts around a hundred Montpellier maples, a very rare species in Tunisia . The park also features Aleppo pine, kermes oak, wild olive, carob, and increasingly Barbary cedar. Several mammals live here, including the serval, wild boar, jackal, fox, mongoose, hare, hedgehog, and the striped hyena . Among the birds, visitors can spot the booted eagle, ferocious buzzard, peregrine falcon, kestrel, short-toed eagle, gambra partridge, turtle dove, and golden eagle .
On October 20, 2016, the park received 21 Cuvier’s gazelles, bringing the total to 43 representatives of this rare species . By the end of 2019, the population had grown to 80 gazelles . The park is part of a broader conservation effort for Cuvier’s gazelle in Tunisia . This species had declined dramatically due to overhunting, but conservation measures have helped it recover . Ultimately, Jebel Serdj National Park offers a unique opportunity to discover Tunisia’s natural heritage.
