The city of Jendouba, known as Souk El Arba until April 30, 1966, lies in northwestern Tunisia, 154 km from Tunis and fifty kilometers from the Algerian-Tunisian border. It is located in the Medjerda valley, at the heart of a fertile plain. As the capital of the governorate bearing its name, Jendouba is the most important urban area in northwestern Tunisia. With its Mediterranean architecture houses, featuring square shapes and one floor, Jendouba has a population of 60,000. Despite its proximity to the Roman site of Bulla Regia, the city does not focus heavily on tourism.
An industrial milk factory “LAINO” has replaced the old sugar factory (beets) and the production of baking powder. However, agriculture dominates here: field crops include wheat, potatoes, carrots, and more. The weekly Wednesday souk gives the city a certain authenticity. Stalls invade the main street and its surroundings, on each side of the railway line. In addition to the usual shops, there is a shoe and clothing souk in Jendouba. The city also features a mosque with an octagonal minaret, typical of the Ottoman era.
The City of Jendouba : Economy and Surroundings
The economy of Jendouba has historically relied on cereal growing, livestock farming, market gardening, and arboriculture. However, since the creation of the industrial zones of Bulla Regia and El Ertiah, the city has witnessed gradual industrialization. In the surroundings, 17 km from Ghardimaou towards the northwest, El Feidja National Park features an integral protection zone of 174 hectares for the safeguarding of Barbary deer. Ultimately, the city of Jendouba offers an authentic glimpse into Tunisia’s agricultural and historical heritage.
