Mahboubine Village

Mahboubine village lies on the island of Djerba, Tunisia. Traditional Berber architecture characterizes this village. The village attracts tourists interested in local culture and history. Djerba offers beautiful beaches, clear waters, and warm weather. Therefore, it is a popular holiday destination. The island also features many historical sites. For instance, visitors can explore the ancient city of Houmt Souk and the El Ghriba synagogue, one of the world’s oldest synagogues.

Mahboubine sits in the heart of Djerba, three kilometers west of Midoun. The name comes from Arabic and means “beloved.” Menzels surround a small commercial space in the village. These menzels line both sides of the main road. This road links Midoun to El May. The village represents Djerbian architecture par excellence. It lies in the countryside, between olive trees and palm trees. Furthermore, it is 19 km southeast of Houmt Souk.

Mahboubine Village : Mosque and Heritage

The El Kateb mosque (mosque of the Cleric) dominates the village. This Ottoman-style mosque dates from the end of the 19th century. It imitates the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul, but in a reduced and simplified form. A low dome precedes the entrance, which small domes surmount. This style characterizes Djerbian menzels, representing a unique island identity with intimate and discreet interiors. The architectural style reveals that founder Ali el Kateb drew influence from Byzantine art during his travels. Orchards, olive groves, and vineyards surround the village. Consequently, it is renowned for its fruit production and enchanting gardens. Ultimately, Mahboubine Village offers an unforgettable journey into Djerba’s architectural and cultural heritage.
