About This Museum
Museu do Saara, deserto, nómadas e expressão artística

The Sahara Museum in Douz was founded in 1997 in a building of Andalusian architectural style. It is dedicated to the nomadic traditions, daily life, material culture, and artistic heritage of the people of the Tunisian Sahara and serves as a cultural gateway to the Grand Erg Oriental desert region.
The museum displays nomadic tents and their furnishings, traditional weaving tools and finished textiles, jewellery and tattoo art of desert communities, hunting and falconry equipment, and objects associated with camel herding and water management in the desert.
Douz is the last major oasis town before the Grand Erg Oriental, the vast sand sea extending south toward Libya and Algeria. It is the principal departure point for camel treks, dune excursions, and desert camping in the Tunisian Sahara, and hosts an annual international Sahara festival.
The museum is in the centre of Douz town, easily reached on foot from the market and the main square. Douz is approximately 500 km south of Tunis, reachable by bus, louage, or hire car via Kairouan and Gafsa.
The festival, typically held in December, celebrates the culture of the Tunisian Sahara with camel races, traditional music and dance, falconry demonstrations, poetry competitions, and desert crafts markets. It is one of Tunisia's most colourful annual events.
Yes. The museum's hands-on cultural displays, life-size tent reconstructions, and the camels available for rides in the nearby dunes make Douz and the Sahara Museum a memorable family destination.
