Perguntas frequentes

Uthina (modern Oudna) was a Roman veteran colony founded under Emperor Augustus. Its amphitheater, still largely buried, is estimated to have held 15,000 spectators, making it the third largest in Tunisia after El Jem and Carthage. Restored columns mark parts of the ancient cityscape.

Uthina is located about 30 km south of Tunis, near the town of Oudna, making it one of the most accessible major Roman sites to the capital. A hire car or taxi from Tunis is the easiest access, or a bus to Oudna followed by a short walk.

The site preserves remains of a Capitol temple, cisterns, thermal baths, a forum, domestic structures, and funerary monuments. Ongoing excavations by Tunisian and international teams continue to reveal new elements of the city.

Uthina remains largely unexcavated, with much of the ancient city still below ground. The amphitheater in particular has been only partially uncovered. This makes it one of Tunisia's great archaeological potentials.

Significant mosaic floors have been uncovered during excavations, and some of the finest Uthina mosaics are now displayed in the Bardo National Museum in Tunis.

Entry is typically inexpensive or managed on site with a modest fee. The site is quiet and rarely crowded, offering a peaceful exploration experience very close to the capital.
