About This Museum
El Museo de Tamazret está situado en el punto más alto del pueblo de Tamazret, a pocos kilómetros de la famosa ciudad troglodita de Matmata, en el sur de Túnez.
Este pequeño pero cautivador museo ofrece una visión única del patrimonio y las tradiciones amazigh (bereberes). Fundado en 1999 por el Sr. Mongi Bouras, artesano local y apasionado guardián de su cultura, el museo fue creado para preservar y compartir la rica identidad cultural del pueblo amazigh.
En su interior, los visitantes pueden explorar una impresionante colección de objetos, textiles y herramientas que reflejan la vida cotidiana en el sur de Túnez. Entre los aspectos más destacados se encuentran chales bordados a mano, zapatillas tradicionales amazigh y el emblemático bakhnoug – un manto de lana tejido que usan las mujeres, con motivos simbólicos. Cada pieza es elaborada con cariño por el propio Sr. Bouras. Su esposa también crea exquisitos collares skhab hechos de cuentas perfumadas, disponibles como souvenirs únicos.

El museo está alojado en una vivienda semitroglodita tradicional, típica de la arquitectura ancestral de la región. Una visita guiada con el Sr. Bouras da vida al museo a través de relatos y anécdotas culturales. Después de la visita, los huéspedes pueden disfrutar de una comida casera en la table d’hôtes, con especialidades locales como el krabbiz, aceitunas, dátiles y té de menta.

The Museum of Tamazret is a small community museum founded in 1999 by Mongi Bouras, a local teacher, in the Berber village of Tamazret near Matmata. It is housed in a semi-troglodyte (partially underground) traditional dwelling and presents the material culture, textiles, and daily life of the Amazigh (Berber) people of the Matmata region.
The collection includes Amazigh weaving textiles, traditional slippers (babouches), bakhnoug wrap-garments, agricultural tools, household objects, and documentation of the oral traditions and customs of the Berber mountain villages. The museum building itself, a semi-troglodyte structure, is part of the experience.
A semi-troglodyte dwelling is partially carved into the rock and partially built above ground, combining the insulating properties of the rock with above-ground living spaces. The Matmata region is famous for its fully underground pit-houses (ghorfa), but semi-troglodyte forms are also traditional in the area.
