For the wild bivouac excursion in the desert of Tunisia, camels are essential to move around.
Camels: The Desert’s Trusted Companions
Camels are tireless walkers and they can carry up to 300 kg of luggage. In the desert, you can only find what you bring, and for a bivouac in the desert, you need tents, mattresses, blankets, food, water, and all the kitchen equipment. Of course, camels also carry your bags, allowing you to travel light!
An Unforgettable One-Night Experience
At a minimum, you can do this experience for just one night. Although the duration is short, it will leave you with unforgettable memories and will surely make you want to come back for longer.
Embarking on Your Desert Journey
You will leave with the dromedaries and their camel drivers in the afternoon, around 3 pm in winter or around 4.30 pm when it is warmer. For 1.5 to 2 hours, you will walk, either on the dromedaries or next to them—your choice.
Preparing for the Bivouac
Before nightfall, your camel drivers will set up the bivouac, and you can help find the wood to make the fire.
Delightful Evening in the Desert
When night falls, it’s time to enjoy a delicious couscous by the wood fire. After dinner, it’s the preparation of the traditional green tea. Traditionally, it is during the tea tasting that stories are shared, songs are sung, and conversations flow.
Choose Your Sleeping Experience
When it’s time to go to bed, you have a choice—sleep under the tent or under the stars. When the weather is clear, most of the time, the sky is extraordinary. The luminous night, without pollution, offers a landscape of sparkling and numerous stars. The silence is total. For your comfort, we provide tents, mattresses, and two blankets per person. If possible, bring a sleeping bag; if you don’t have one, we have some to lend.
Morning in the Desert
When you wake up at sunrise, breakfast is ready. The aroma of bakery delights fills the air. You’ll enjoy flatbread baked in the sand, eaten hot with jam, cheese, olive oil, and biscuits—a real treat. Then, after breakfast, it’s time to set off again and return to the starting point.
An Authentic Desert Experience
The wild bivouac night in Ksar Ghilane is a 100% local and authentic experience. This tour is for those who want to avoid the crowds and tourist spots, and instead, discover local life and meet the locals. With Bedouin camel drivers born in the desert, you will spend the night in the middle of nowhere.
A Night of Cultural Immersion
First, go to the campsite on the back of a camel. Then, look for wood to light the fire and help prepare dinner. At night, around this fire, enjoy a Tunisian dinner, listen to the stories of the camel drivers, and dance to 100% Bedouin music. At the end of the day, you will sleep under a starry sky where the Milky Way will seem close at hand.
