The museum of Tamazret

The museum of Tamazret is Perched at the highest point of Tamazret near Matmata.

It offers a unique glimpse into Amazigh heritage. Established in 1999, it showcases the architecture, cultural artifacts, and social traditions of the Berber people. Visitors can admire embroidered shawls, handmade Amazigh slippers, and the famous bakhnoug, all crafted by the museum’s passionate founder, Mr. Mongi Bouras. His wife also creates beautiful skhab bead necklaces, available for purchase.

The museum itself is a traditional semi-troglodyte house, preserved in its original form to reflect the architectural ingenuity of Amazigh culture. Guided by Mongi himself, visitors explore this authentic space enriched by stories of Berber history and traditions. After the tour, enjoy a taste of regional cuisine at the museum’s table d’hôtes, featuring specialties like the traditional Berber krabbiz.
