Archeologické naleziště Kartágo
Starověké punské a římské hlavní město

According to ancient tradition, Carthage was founded in 814 BC by Phoenician settlers from Tyre, led by the princess Dido (Elissa). It grew to become the dominant power of the western Mediterranean, controlling trade routes from Spain to Libya until its destruction by Rome in 146 BC.
The site is spread across several zones: Byrsa Hill with the National Museum and Punic-Roman remains, the Antonine Baths on the seafront, the Punic Ports (circular military and rectangular commercial harbours), the Roman Theatre, the Tophet, the Magon Quarter, and the Roman Villas. A combined ticket covers most zones.
Yes. UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Site of Carthage in 1979. The inscribed area encompasses multiple component monuments across the Carthage peninsula.
The combined Carthage ticket costs approximately 20 TND and covers access to several monument zones. A thorough visit to all the main components takes three to five hours. The TGM suburban railway from Tunis (La Marsa line) stops at several stations adjacent to different zones of the site.
After razing Punic Carthage in 146 BC, Rome rebuilt the city as the capital of Africa Proconsularis in the 1st century BC. Roman Carthage grew into the second largest city of the western empire and a major Christian centre. The Arab conquest in 698 AD definitively ended Carthage as a city.
Tunis is the ideal base. The TGM train from Tunis Marine station runs frequently and stops directly at Carthage-Hannibal, Carthage-Dermech, Carthage-Byrsa, Carthage-Salammbô, and Carthage-Présidence stations, each near a different cluster of monuments.
